[Class 12 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVI] A heavy-duty bearing comprises a shell of cast iron having its graphite in nodular formation, and a lining of bearing metal bonded thereto. Before casting the shell, cerium, magnesium or alloys thereof are added to the molten iron to produce a nodular formation of the graphite, and after casting the surface of the shell is treated chemically to remove graphite, silica and other non-ferrous constituents. The lining of bearing metal may be produced in situ on the tinned surface by casting, electrodeposition or by sintering metal powder. Alternatively the lining may be prepared as a strip and subsequently bonded to the shell as by soldering. |
