Media insertion system

A method of encoding a framed media stream at an encoder for broadcast at a headend is disclosed where the encoded media output stream includes a splice point message referenced to a frame of the media stream at a time indicated by a media scheduler. The method comprises synchronising the frame timing of the encoder to the timing of the media scheduler. The splice point message is inserted in the framed media stream at a fixed interval before the occurance of the splice point or the media scheduler outputs a clock signal to the encoder for synchronisation purposes. A framed media stream encoder arranged to perform the above method is also disclosed.
