1. A system for finding a direction of a nerve from a surgical instrument comprising:
a surgical accessory having at least a first stimulation electrode on a distal region and a second stimulation electrode spaced apart from the first stimulation electrode, the stimulation electrodes each configured to deliver an electrical stimulation signal; at least one sensor configured to detect an evoked response from a nerve depolarized by the electrical stimulation signals; and a control unit in communication with the surgical accessory and the at least one sensor, the control unit being configured to (a) electrically stimulate the first stimulation electrodes with a first set of at least one stimulation signal until a first initial bracket within which a first threshold stimulation current level must lie is determined, (b) electrically stimulate the second stimulation electrode until a second initial bracket within which a second threshold stimulation current level must lie is determined, (c) process the determined first and second initial brackets to find a direction from the surgical accessory to the nerve, said processing including determining the first threshold stimulation current level by narrowing the first initial bracket to a first final bracket and determining the second threshold stimulation current level by narrowing the second initial bracket to a second final bracket, (d) display on a display communicatively linked to the control unit, an initial indicator indicating a general direction of the nerve from the surgical accessory, the general direction based on the determination of said first and second initial brackets, and (e) display on the display, a subsequent indicator indicating a more specific direction of the nerve from based on the determination of first and second threshold stimulation current levels. |
