A method of manufacturing an object comprises depositing a first layer 2 of construction material (e.g powder, or granular material) on a build platform 13, depositing binder onto the first layer to bind at least a region of the first layer together to form a support layer 2; depositing a second layer of construction material on the support layer to form a spacer layer 3; depositing a third layer 4a of construction material on the spacer layer, depositing binder selectively onto the third layer to bind one or more regions of the third layer together to form a first layer of the object. Preferably, substantially all of the first layer may be bound or just a region (2a, fig 8) arranged directly below the first layer of the object. The region may include an aperture portion, a mesh or a grid portion. The spacer layer preferably has a thickness such that binder from the third layer cannot penetrate to the support layer. A spacer layer (1, fig 7) may further be deposited on the support platform before the first layer is deposited. A method of processing object data comprising combining data representing the structure of an object and data representing the structure of a support layer is also provided. A data carrier, an apparatus for processing object data and an additive manufacturing apparatus are further disclosed. |
