Disclosed is a method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising a lean NOx trap. In said method, the raw NOx emission level in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine is set to a reference variable at which the fuel consumption is minimal, wherein a first portion of fuel consumption (7) resulting from the combustion is taken into account in accordance with the raw NOx emission level, and a second portion of fuel consumption (8) resulting from the regeneration of the lean NOx trap at intervals is taken into account in accordance with the raw NOx emission level. |
