A security system and method is provided that uses an auxiliary sensor (20), such as a video camera, to verify the presence of an object within a part of an interrogation zone (50). The presence of an activated security system tag in an interrogation zone (50) is detected. The system also determines whether an object is in a surveillance detection zone (52) when the activated security system tag is detected. An alarm is initiated if the object is in the surveillance detection zone (52) within a predetermined time after the activated security system tag is detected in the interrogation zone (50). The alarm may be based on the direction of motion of the object in the surveillance zone (52). |
