<p>Rubber is bonded to fibrous material by vulcanizing it on to fibrous material, the molecules of which comprise repeating units containing carbon, hydrogen, and a more electronegative element than carbon, which has been impregnated with a permanently fusible synthetic resin in solution in an organic liquid that is completely miscible with water, drying the material, the synthetic resin being a product obtainable by condensing an aldehyde containing at least 2 carbon atoms with a phenol containing a single hydroxy group, the said solution being free from any source of formaldehyde. Preferably the resin is insoluble in water but soluble in methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, acetone, tetramethylene oxide and dioxane and is used in solution in ethanol. The fibrous material may be cotton, linen, ramie, jute, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate, cellulose-acetate-propionate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, ethyl cellulose, polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile, copolymers of vinyl acetate, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, poly - 4 - amino - 1,2,4 - triazole, wood and paper. The term rubber includes natural rubber, polymers and copolymers of chloroprene, and copolymers of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or isobutylene, and copolymers of isoprene with isobutylene. The resins are thought to have the formula <FORM:0680338/IV (c)/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or methyl groups, and R3 is methyl or furfuryl. Specification 477,380 is referred to.ALSO:Rubber is bonded to fibrous material by vulcanising it onto fibrous material, the molecules of which comprise repeating units containing carbon, hydrogen, and a more electronegative element than carbon, which has been impregnated with a permanently fusible synthetic resin in solution in an organic liquid that is completely miscible with water, drying the material, the synthetic resin being a product obtainable by condensing an aldehyde containing at least 2 carbon atoms with a phenol containing a single hydroxy group, the said solution being free from any source of formaldehyde.
