The purpose of the present invention is to provide a membrane electrode assembly capable of preventing poisoning of an electrode catalytic layer. A method for producing the membrane electrode assembly on which the electrode catalytic layer is formed on a surface of an electrolyte membrane includes the following processes: (a) producing the electrode catalytic layer by drying a catalyst-supported particle on which catalytic metal is supported, a solvent, and catalytic ink containing an ionomer; and (b) producing the membrane electrode assembly by selecting the electrode catalytic layer in which the amount of sulfateion contained in the produced electrode catalytic layer is less than or equal to the predetermined value.
