PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform work for forming a coating 9 in a short time on a complicated and three-dimensional shaped part to be treated of a metal member 1 using discharge energy.SOLUTION: The discharge surface treatment method comprises: supplying a pulse current having a current waveform consisting of a head pulse Pa for breaking a discharge electrode 31 and a succeeding pulse Pb having a pulse width Wb set to 1/2 or less times of the pulse width Wa of the head pulse Pa or a pulse current having a current waveform consisting of only the head pulse Pa between a tip portion of the discharge electrode 31 and a part to be treated of a metal member 1 to generate a pulse shaped discharge while relatively approaching the tip portion of the discharge electrode 31 to the part to be treated of the metal member 1; and forming a recessed part 37 having a shape corresponding to the part to be treated of the metal member 1 in the tip portion of the discharge electrode 31 by the discharge energy.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
