PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emission element that can emit light without forming any electrode, and facilitate setting of a light emission area.SOLUTION: A light emission element 1 has a board 13, a lower semiconductor layer 14, an active layer 15 and an upper semiconductor layer 16 which are successively laminated, and has plural columnar light beam direction controllers 11, 12 which are provided on the surface of the upper semiconductor layer 16 to protrude from the surface so as to surround a predetermined area and emit light from emission faces at the tips thereof, and a light emission portion 20. The board 13 is formed of a material having a larger bandgap than the energy of exciting light, and the active layer 15 is formed of a material having a bandgap smaller than the energy of the exciting light. The active layer 15 emits light by exciting a light emission area 15a which is specified by the irradiation range and position of the exciting light emitted from the light emission portion 20. The light beam direction controllers 11, 12 shape a light beam by an interference effect of light emitted from the emission faces thereof, and emit the light beam in a direction corresponding to the difference in height of the columns.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
