A holder for taps, reamers and the like hav-' ing cylindrical shanks which are square at the extremity comprises a sleeve 1 into the lower end of which is fitted a slotted chuck 3 having internally stepped jaws 6 providing sockets of different sizes corresponding to the shank diameters of tools of consecutive sizes. As shown, the square extremity 7 of the shank 8 of a tool is positioned in the socket 6 2 , the corners of the square extending into the slots 4 and the cylindrical shank 8 extending into the next larger socket 6 3 . The dimensions of the sockets are such that on drawing the chuck into the sleeve to grip the square extremity 7 the jaws also grip the cylindrical shank 8 in the socket 6,. To enable the square extremity of the shank of a tool to be gripped in the socket 6 3 , the slots are widened in this section or the jaws may be flattened adjacent the slots. |
