PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a methacrylic acid compound with good yield.SOLUTION: Provided is a production process for producing a methacrylic acid compound represented by formula (II) by reacting a propionic acid compound represented by formula (I) and a formaldehyde compound selected from formaldehyde hemiacetal, formaldehyde acetal, 1,3,5-trioxane and paraformaldehyde, under the presence of a solid acid catalyst and a solid base catalyst, in which, for 1 mole of the formaldehyde compound, 0.005 to 2 moles of water is supplied to the reaction system.
