A METHOD OF JOINING WORKPIECES

A method of joining workpieces includes locating first ends of two first workpieces in a moveable part coupling portion. The lengths of the first workpieces are measured. Any difference in length between the first workpieces is determined. Two additional workpieces are located adjacent the first ends of the first workpieces based on the determined difference in length. The first workpieces are connected to the second workpieces.

1. A method of joining workpieces, comprising:
locating first ends of two first parts in a part coupling portion, said part coupling portion being fixed to a slide device capable of axial movement; simultaneously measuring the length of said two first parts; determining a difference in length of said two first parts; adjusting an axial location of both first parts simultaneously to adjust for any differences in length; locating two second parts adjacent two second ends of said two first parts; and simultaneously welding said first and second parts together.
