Disclosed are a mobile terminal capable of checking and managing places which a user has ever visited easily and conveniently, by generating navigation history information based on place-based data detected from a server corresponding to a user account, and a method of controlling the same. The mobile terminal includes: a communication unit; a display unit configured to display map data; and a controller configured to access a server through the communication unit, to detect place-based data corresponding to a user account from the server, to generate navigation history information by registering the detected place-based data to the map data, and to display the navigation history information on the display unit.

a communication unit; a display unit configured to display map data; and a controller configured to:
access a server through the communication unit,detect, from the server, place data corresponding to a user account of a user associated with the mobile terminal,generate navigation history information by registering the detected place data to the map data, anddisplay, on the display unit, the navigation history information over the map data based on the registration of the detected place data to the map data, wherein the controller is configured to detect whether position information included in the navigation history information exists in a point of interest (POI) database of the mobile terminal, and wherein the controller is configured to access, from a server, an address of the position information included in the navigation history information or a global positioning system (GPS) coordinate value based on a detection that the position information included in the navigation history information does not exist in the POI database of the mobile terminal.
