PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoacoustic image generation device that suppresses the light emission of a light source without preventing puncture work.SOLUTION: A puncture needle 15 comprises an outer needle and an inner needle, and the inner needle comprises a light emission part and a photoacoustic wave generating part. Insertion/withdrawal detection means 30 detects that the inner needle of the puncture needle 15 has been withdrawn from the outer needle.
