A magnetic position detection device is provided with two magnetic scales 1a, 1b having alternatingly disposed N and S poles, magnetic sensing element groups 2a, 2b for measuring variation in the magnetic fields formed by the magnetic scales 1a, 1b, and a position calculation device 3 for calculating absolute positions in relation to the magnetic scales 1a, 1b on the basis of the output values of the magnetic sensing elements 21. The difference in the number of poles between the magnetic scales 1a, 1b is 2, and the magnetic sensing elements 21 of the magnetic sensing element groups 2a, 2b are disposed at an interval arrived at by dividing the pole length evenly by the number of magnetic sensing elements 21. |
