CONSTITUTION: A secondary transfer unit 10 includes a secondary transfer belt 50, transfer roller 52, and backup roller 60, and transfers a toner image formed on an intermediate transfer belt 32 to a sheet. The secondary transfer unit 10 further includes a cam 68 that can change the arrangement position of the transfer device between a contact position and a separation position. At the contact position, the backup roller is set to a floating state, and at the separation position, the backup roller is connected to a reference potential terminal 72 and set to a non-floating state.EFFECT: A backup roller is in a floating state at an image forming position to prevent a transfer current from flowing to the outside and prevent loss of transferability.
