727,622. Pivotal joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 24, 1953 [July 24, 1952], No. 5131/53. Class 65(2). A friction joint comprises a housing 2a secured to a member 2, a flat surface 10 associated with the housing, a stud 4 secured to a member 1 and passing through aligned apertures in the housing and the surface 10, a head 7 on the stud having a complementary flat surface co-operating with the surface 10, and spring means 18 between the member 1 and the housing providing the sole braking force between said surfaces. The construction as shown provides an anti-shimmy joint for an independent wheel suspension, member 1 being a steering knuckle and member 2 being the upper steering arm. Surface 10 is formed on a hemispherical member 11 which seats in a partspherical sleeve 12 secured to the housing. The rounded end of the head 7 seats in a closure plate 9. The aperture in the housing is sealed by plates 14, 15, and the spring is enclosed in a housing consisting of plates 16, 17 and a rubber ring 19. Lubricant grooves 13 are formed in the member 11. In a modification the spring is tapered. In a further modification a plate spring replaces the spiral spring, and plates 15 and 16 are combined. Specification 652,432 is referred to. |
