The purpose of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device having high transmittance or open area ratio and high front contrast. This liquid crystal display device has three or five regions including a pair of polarizing plates and a liquid crystal cell having a first substrate having a pixel electrode, a second substrate having a shared electrode, and a vertically aligned liquid crystal layer including negative dielectrically anisotropic liquid crystal molecules, the pixel electrode including first, second, and third slit regions; a second substrate surface has first, second, and third regions facing the first, second, and third slit regions; the liquid crystal molecules in the vicinity of the first, second, and third regions are pre-tilted in mutually different directions; and at least one of the pair of polarizing plates has an optical compensation film that is disposed on the liquid crystal cell side of a polarizer and that satisfies the conditions (1) 60 nm <= R0 <= 80 nm, (2) 280 nm <= Rth <= 400 nm, and (3) 3 <= (Rth/d) × 1000 simultaneously. |
