A torque limiting device 60 is connectable between sections of a rotatable tubular device. The torque limiting device 60 includes first 1 and second tubular elements 19, a driven element 20, a drive element 9 and a biasing member 4. The drive element 9 and the driven element 20 are in rotational communication with the first and second tubular elements 1, 19 through a complimentary mating surface, such as teeth (fig 2, 25, 25A). The drive element 9 and driven element 20 can be engaged with, disengaged from and re-engaged with each other. Upon relative rotation of drive element 9 and driven element 20 a longitudinal force is imparted in the direction of disengagement while the biasing member 4 applies a biasing force in the direction of engagement, the biasing member 4 may be a spring that is adjustable using a nut 2. Disengagement occurs when the longitudinal force exceeds a predetermined biasing force. A bearing assembly may be used to control movement and comprises a ball bearing 8 and stop 7. |
