A hospital workforce scheduling system 103 comprises a processor and a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to access scheduling information 105 for a hospital unit comprising a number of staff available for working in the hospital unit 104 and a staffing ratio for the hospital unit; accessing projected census value 104, calculated reflecting current and future patient movement and progression within and between units; calculating the number of projected work is needed for each hospital unit based on the projected census value and the staffing ratio; and outputting the number of projected workers needed for each hospital unit 106. The projected census value may be provided by a capacity management system CMS 101. The system may further be configured to automatically identify workers from the number of staff available and assign the identified workers to available beds based on the projected census value. The system may be configured to determine a mismatch between the number of projected workers needed and the projected census value and issue notifications regarding staffing.
