Light source controller 2 having an output coupleable to a light source 6 of a road vehicle; the controller comprising a control output operable to cause a light source to produce a pattern of light pulses that stimulate a reaction in human peripheral vision and not in human foveal vision. The controller may comprise an ambient light signal or a vehicle speed signal input. Intensity and/or strobe pulse pattern adjustable depending on received ambient light or vehicle speed signals. Also claimed is a light source comprising the light source controller, the light source may further include a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver 12 to detect speed, or an ambient light sensor 10. The light signal output by the controller may flash close to the critical flicker fusion (CFF) frequency of a human eye. The light appears to flash in a peripheral vision but appears constantly lit when viewed directly. Applied particularly to motorcycle headlights to improve subliminal recognition and awareness by other road users and may be retrofitted. The light source may be white and/or may be non-white LEDs. |
