Provided is a method for separating lactic acid or a salt thereof, comprising the steps of: removing a coloring material including hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from a fermented solution including at least one of lactic acid or a salt thereof; and collecting lactic acid or the salt thereof from the fermented solution in which the coloring material is removed. According to one aspect, the method is capable of separating high-purity lactic acid which is optically transparent at high temperatures, or the salt thereof.
