The present invention relates to a system and a method for detecting a preceding vehicle at a short distance. The system for detecting a preceding vehicle at a short distance comprises a first preceding vehicle detection unit, a second preceding vehicle detection unit and a drive control module. The first preceding vehicle detection unit processes an image taken by a front camera for photographing the front side of the vehicle to calculate the distance from the preceding vehicle and the speed and acceleration of the preceding vehicle. The second preceding vehicle detection unit processes an image taken by multiple cameras for photographing the surroundings of the vehicle from an around view image of the vehicle and detects the preceding vehicle of the around view image to calculate the distance from the preceding vehicle and the speed and acceleration of the preceding vehicle. The drive control module operates one of the first preceding vehicle detection unit and the second preceding vehicle detection unit in accordance with the processed result of the image taken by the front camera. Accordingly, the accurate position of the preceding vehicle is determined using an around view monitoring system, and the speed and acceleration of the preceding vehicle can be accurately calculated. In addition, by accurately determining the position of the preceding vehicle, the system can warn a driver of the possibility of collision with the preceding vehicle or stop the driver′s vehicle to prevent a collision with the preceding vehicle, thereby allowing safe driving. |
