PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for preventing and treating varicella zoster.SOLUTION: Provided is an inactivated varicella zoster virus (VZV), where the infectivity of the inactivated VZV is under the detection limit and elicits immune response to the VZV when administered to a patient. Also provided is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of the virus and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. In certain embodiments of the composition, the VZV is inactivated by about 5 kGy to about 50 kGy of gamma radiation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
