The method involves changing a display area of a display device (2) for representation of a digital map with respect to a size. A represented yardstick of the digital map remains unchanged during changing of the size of the display area for representation of the map. The digital map is covered by representation of a round instrument in a display mode of the display device. A display e.g. twisted nematic LCD, of the display device is provided in a field of vision or proximity of the field of vision of a driver. An independent claim is also included for a display device for a vehicle for displaying a digital map.
