A process of effecting nuclear reactions in a nuclear reactor, in which the atomic fuel circulates in the granular form through the reactor and subsequently through a heat exchanger, is characterized in that the atomic fuel is passed in granular form through the reactor by gravity, is discharged at the bottom and added to a gas stream, and subsequently, suspended in the gas, passed, via a heat exchanger, to the top of the reactor, where the solid matter is separated from the gas and again fed into the reactor. In Fig. 1 the reactor comprises a reflector 1, a chamber 2 for the moderator which may consist of heavy water, and reactor tubes 3 through which the granular fuel passes. The moderating heavy water may circulate through a heat exchanger (not shown) so that its temperature is kept sufficiently low. The walls of the tubes 3 may be of tightly sintered BeO, and if the moderator is heavy water the outside of the tubes should preferably be coated with a porous substance such as lightly sintered BeO. The tubes 3 debouch into vibrating vessels 4 into which gas, such as helium or carbon monoxide, is fed from a conduit 10 ; the gas entrains the fuel in the vessels 4 and passes it through a heat exchanger 15, where it gives up heat for example to a liquid metal, to hydrocyclones 17 which separate the gas from the fuel. The fuel is returned to the reactor and the gas passed through a purification device 20 and a pump 21 back to the vibrating vessels 4. In a homogeneous reactor, Fig. 2 (not shown), the tubes 3 are omitted and the chamber 2 is filled with a granular mixture of nuclear fuel and moderator, e.g., a mixture of granular uranium oxide and beryllium oxide. Apertures in the bottom of the reactor vessel discharge into vibrating vessels where the granular material is entrained by the gas and passed through a heat exchanger as in Fig. 1.
