In a window pivoted about a vertical axis on hinges disposed on opposite horizontal rails, the window being lockable in the closed position by releasable fastening means, the latter are operable by means of a handle which is mounted on the window and is also coupled to friction brake means associated with at least one of the hinges, whereby the brake is applied when the handle is moved to the locking position. As shown, the lower hinge comprises a bracket 10 attachable to the frame and carrying a cup 12 which contains a pair of brake shoes 16, 17 adapted to be pressed adjustably against the base of the cup by means of a nut 19, non- rotatably fixed in the cup, and a screw 20. The upper parts of the brake blocks are formed with diametrically opposed recesses 22, 23 housing a U-shaped leaf spring 24, the closed end of which is secured to a pin 26 depending from a boss portion 14 of the hinge member 13 attachable to the window. The open end of the spring embraces a cam member 27 carried by a pin 28 which is journalled in boss 14 and is secured to an arm 29. operable by a rod 30, the latter being slidably mounted in the lower rail of the window and being coupled to the operating handle of the fastening means. Movement of the handle to the locking position thereby turns the cam to expand the spring for forcing the brake shoes outwardly against the cup. The latter is formed with a notch 33 to facilitate insertion of the spring. The upper hinge comprises a plate 36 fixed to the window and carrying a socket 37 containing a pintle 43 which may be screwed into and out of a plate 35 secured to the frame. |
