Polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl esters of saturated C2-18 aliphatic acids or with vinylidene chloride and cellulose esters, including nitrocellulose, are plasticized and stabilized by means of the epoxidation product of a mixture of animal fatty acid diaceto glycerides consisting of 30-60 per cent by weight of saturated animal fatty acid diaceto glycerides and 70-40 per cent of unsaturated animal fatty acid diaceto glycerides, the fatty acids having at least 16 carbon atoms in the molecule (see Group IV (b)). The term "fatty acid diaceto glycerides" denotes mixtures of compounds which contain an average of about two aceto groups per molecule, and minor amounts of glycerides containing more or fewer than two aceto groups may be present. The plasticizing agents may be used in proportion amounting to 40 per cent of the plasticized resin. Examples describe the plasticizing of a vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer with epoxidized diaceto glycerides from tallow or lard, together with a minor amount of stearic acid. The fatty acid diaceto glycerides may be prepared by reacting the fatty acid triglycerides, e.g. tallow, lard or grease, with triacetin or first with glycerol to obtain the fatty acid monoglycerides which are then diacetylated with acetic acid or its anhydride. The epoxidation products are plasticizerstabilizers for various synthetic resins (see Groups IV (a) and V). In examples: (1) tallow is heated with triacetin using sodium methylate catalyst and the resulting tallow diaceto glyceride is epoxidized with peracetic acid in acetic acid; (2) in the same way lard is converted into the lard diaceto glyceride which is then likewise epoxidized.
