Method and apparatus for diagnosing interface oversubscription and microbursts

A methodology is described for providing a dedicated interface-level oversubscription diagnostics queue that would store header data and timestamps for ingress frames which would otherwise be dropped due to the input FIFO queue being full. When the microburst is over, the data may be transmitted to the main CPU to analyze the cause of oversubscription as well as affected traffic.

1. A method of diagnosing data microbursts comprising:
reserving a portion of a first memory; setting a first bit when an ingress FIFO queue is full; receiving a first frame that cannot be accommodated by the ingress FIFO queue; storing a reduced version of the first frame in the reserved portion of the first memory; attaching a timestamp associated with the receipt of the first frame to the reduced version of the first frame; and queueing a timestamped event in the ingress FIFO queue indicating the end of a microburst, when the ingress FIFO queue is no longer full.
