PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a compact capable of giving high mechanical stability and adjusting electric characteristics or tribology characteristics.SOLUTION: There are provided a method for forming a compact 22 having a support matrix 50 of silicon carbide and a carbon structure combined with the matrix, and the compact. In the method, a substrate composed of the silicon carbide 50 or a powder mixture 53 of silicon and carbon, and a binding agent 51 is laminated and subjected to thermal decomposition 56 to form the compact after the bonding agent 51 is cured. A carbon content in the carbon structure is adjusted by thermal decomposition of the bonding agent 51, a carbon content in the powder mixture 53 or permeation of a carbon material into the support matrix 50 of silicon carbide.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8
