TECHNIQUES FOR IDENTIFYING AND RECOMMENDING SKILLS

Disclosed in some examples are methods, machine readable mediums, and systems for providing a list of skills a member should learn in order to achieve a particular goal. The system may provide a user interface to the member of the social networking service. Through the user interface, the member may select one or more goals that they wish to achieve. Based upon these goals, the list of skills associated with that goal may be determined—this list is a goal set of skills. The goal set of skills may be compared to the member's current skills. Skills in the list of goal skills that the member does not already possess may be recommended to the member.

1. A method for recommending a skill to a user of a social networking service, the method comprising:
determining a first set of skills, the first set of skills being a subset of a standardized list of skills and indicated on a user profile of the user; receiving a selected goal of the user; determining a second set of skills, the second set of skills being a second subset of a standardized list of skills, the second set of skills determined based on the selected goal of the user and data of the social networking service corresponding to skills; determining a third set of skills that is the difference between the first and second sets of skills; generating a graphical user interface including at least one of the skills in the third set of skills; and presenting the graphical user interface to the user.
