The present invention pertains to a hook and loop fastener having a plurality of male-type engaging elements standing on a substrate made from resin. The male-type engaging element has a stem that stands on the substrate and a projection that projects in the width direction of the substrate from the tip or middle of the stem. The male-type engaging elements form a row in the lengthwise direction of the substrate, and a plurality of these rows is arranged in the width direction of the substrate. Furthermore, a male-type engaging element row described below (A1) is present in the center of the substrate in the width direction and a male-type engaging element row described below (A2) is present on either adjacent side in the width direction. (A1) A male-type engaging element with one level of projection projecting from the stem, wherein the length of the projection is no less than 0.4 mm. (A2) A male-type engaging element with two or more levels of projections projecting from the stem in the vertical direction of the stem, wherein the length of the uppermost projection is no more than 0.35 mm.
