Compositions and methods are provided for transforming plants, preferably monocotyledons, and even more preferably, sugar cane. The transformation methods involve infecting plant tissue with Agrobacterium, and co-cultivating the same using a culture medium comprising high concentrations of a gelling agent, which results in the inhibition of the exacerbated growth of the bacteria and in an increase of the transformation frequency. The invention includes the regeneration of transformed plants, and the actual transformed plants.
