PRODUCTION OF MONO AND/OR DIISOPROPYLNAPHTHALENE

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high conversion of raw material, by reacting naphthalene and/or monoisopropylnaphthalene with propylene in the presence of a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon compound and a catalyst containing a specific type-Y zeolite. CONSTITUTION:beta-Monoisopropylnaphthalnene and/or 2,6- and 2,7- diisopropylnaphthalenes useful as an intermediate for a polymeric material can be produced in high selectivity and long life of catalytic activity, by reacting (A) naphthalene and/or monoisopropylnaphthalene with (B) propylene in the presence of (C) a catalyst containing type-Y zeolite having a silica/alumina molar ratio of 10-350 and (D) a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon compound preferably at 160-300 deg.C under a pressure of >=0.5kg/cm<2>G, thereby alkylating the raw material A with a solid catalyst in high conversion. The charging amount of the compound D is preferably 0.05-10 pts.wt. per 1 pt.wt. of the raw material A.
