An oil/water separator (100) comprises a tank structure (101) divided into first and second compartments (102U, 103) that communicate via a bottom channel (102L). An oil/water inlet (110) into the first compartment (102U) is provided for supplying an oil/water mix to be separated. An oil suction outlet (111) is provided for drawing oil out of the first compartment (102U). A water discharge outlet is provided in the second compartment (102L) from which water is arranged to start discharging unassisted once the water level in the second compartment has reached a predetermined level. Oil in the first compartment may be heated by opposed heating tanks (104, 105) that sandwich the first compartment. An apertured horizontal plate (106) may be provided to separate the first compartment from the bottom channel and minimize mixing of oil and water in rough seas. Advantageously the oil/water separator is suitable for use aboard an oil spill recovery vessel. |
