A coffee tamper 1 for tamping coffee grounds in a basket or portafilter of an espresso machine, by which device a reproducible pressure is applied to the coffee grounds. The tamper comprises a circular punch unit 2 having a tamping surface 7, and a top 3 having a wider diameter than the punch unit. One of either the top or the punch unit comprises a blind, threaded hole 14 which cooperates with a threaded post 10 disposed in a circular recess 12 of the other component. When screwed together, the two components may be secured by a grub screw. The top may comprise an indication means to indicate when the rim 6 of the top in is contact with the rim of the basket or portafilter. The indication means may be mechanical and may comprise acoustic or haptic feedback. |
