<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas cleaning system which has the excellent cleaning performance of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon or the like in a rich atmosphere and has the excellent cleaning performance of nitrogen oxide between a low temperature region and a high temperature region in a stoichiometric atmosphere even when a platinum group element is not used or the used amount of the platinum group element is greatly reduced. <P>SOLUTION: In the exhaust gas cleaning system, a coat layer is formed on a carrier arranged in an exhaust gas flow passage of an internal combustion engine. The coat layer includes a material for adsorbing/desorbing and/or reforming hydrocarbon and a transition metal element (except a platinum group element)-containing catalyst. Hydrocarbon, which is desorbed or reformed from the material for adsorbing/desorbing and/or reforming the hydrocarbon, and/or its reformed gas are made to react with nitrogen oxide on the transition metal element (except the platinum group element)-containing catalyst to clean them. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
