A tidal power generation and pumped storage system 10 comprises three tanks 12, 14, 16 located in tidal sea 18. Two of the tanks 12, 14 are in fluid communication with the sea 18, so that a first tank 12 is filled to sea level at high tide, and a second tank 14 is emptied to sea level at low tide. A fluid passageway 26 between the high tide and low tide tanks 12, 14 contains a turbine 30, the power from which is used to pump water to a third tank 16, raising the level in the third tank to above high tide level via connection 34 and pump 32. Energy is generated when required by turbine generator 42 in a passage 40 between the third tank 16 and the low tide tank 14. Alternatively, power generated from flow between high and low tide tanks 12, 14 may pump water out of the third tank 16, lowering the water to below low tide level (figures 5-8). |
