PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, capable of securing the responsiveness of a variable valve timing mechanism while improving fuel efficiency.SOLUTION: An ECU is configured to calculate a future target phase on the basis of a throttle opening, to calculate an estimated value for a future actual phase from the future target phase, to calculate a lookahead deviation as a deviation between the future target phase and the estimated value for the future actual phase, and to set a higher hydraulic pressure to be discharged from an oil pump as the lookahead deviation is greater.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 10
