The disclosure features dendritic tags, and methods and systems for fabricating and using such tags. The methods can include obtaining at least one image of a dendritic tag attached to an article, analyzing the at least one image to identify a set of features associated with the dendritic tag, and comparing the set of features to stored information to identify the article.

1. A method, comprising:
obtaining an image of a dendritic structure in a tag attached to an article or to a container comprising the article; segmenting the image into a plurality of regions and assigning a binary value to each region based on the portion of the dendritic structure in each region; constructing a binary spatial representation of the dendritic structure based on the plurality of regions; and comparing the binary spatial representation to reference information for a plurality of dendritic structures to determine information about the article.
