A data compression device is provided. This data compression device is characterized by including: a matching string search unit which, from a text string of data prior to compression, extracts a second text string following a first text string and identical to the first text string as a matching string, and which determines the length of the matching string, and a relative position indicating the position of an address which precedes the second text string and at which the first text string begins; a matching string division unit which, from the second text string extracted by the matching string search unit, extracts a third text string of shorter length than the relative position; a matching length encoding unit for detecting and encoding the length of the third text string; and a matching position encoding unit for encoding the relative position.
