Arrangement for secure system isolation of surge arresters, particularly varistors 1, in the presence of temporary overvoltages as a result of a fuse 4 in series with the surge arrester 1 tripping out, wherein the surge arrester 1 has a flashover gap 6 or is electrically connected to a separate flashover gap 6, wherein the surge arrester 1 is provided with an encapsulation 7 or housing and the encapsulation 7 or housing has an opening, which is directed towards the respective flashover gap, such that a flow of gas that arises when the surge arrester 1 is subject to thermal load or is burning up reaches the flashover gap, resulting in a reduction in the flashover voltage of the flashover gap and resulting in a flow of current with the fuse in series tripping out.
