The present specification relates to an apparatus and a method for battery cell balancing in a battery management system, which can prevent the overheating of a battery cell balancing circuit in a battery management system. According to an embodiment of the present specification, the battery cell balancing apparatus comprises: a battery module including a plurality of battery cells; a storage unit where a voltage threshold value of the batter cell is set and stored; and a control unit connected to the battery module, and monitoring and controlling the charging and discharging status of the battery cells of the battery module. The control unit calculates average voltage by measuring voltage of the battery cells, determines whether a voltage value of a cell exceeds the threshold value set and stored in the storage unit by selecting a maximum voltage cell among the battery cells, and discharges the cell until voltage of the maximum voltage cell reaches the average voltage when the voltage value of the cell exceeds the threshold value. |
