A method of treating a retroviral infection in a primate subject, comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically acceptable amount of a compound of the structure: wherein M+ is K+, Na+, Li+, Ca2+, Mg2+, or [NR1R2R3R4]+, wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 are each independently hydrogen or C1-5 alkyl; wherein the compound is administered to the subject daily or weekly in an amount of about 25 mg to about 400 mg, wherein the subject has an NRTI resistant HIV infection.
