The present invention relates to a method for preparing a negative electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery. The method includes the steps of: preparing a core material to dope and dedope lithium; activating the surface of the core material; mixing the core material with the activated surface, lithium precursors, and a titanium precursor and heat-treating the mixture; and obtaining a negative electrode active material containing lithium titanium oxide and lithium silicate. A step of making the surface of the core material hydrophilic is executed by using hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, alcohol-based substances, or a mixture thereof.
