The present invention relates to a washing machine comprising a moving mechanism, and a method for controlling the same. The washing machine comprises: a cabinet; a tub disposed inside the cabinet; a rotary tub provided to be rotated to the inside of the tub; a front panel positioned on one side of the cabinet and having an opening where laundry is inputted and withdrawn; and an operating unit moving the tub to vary a distance between the tub and the front panel. The front panel and the tube are spaced from each other during washing to prevent transmission of vibration and disposed to be adjacent to each other to improve user convenience when the laundry is inputted and withdrawn.
