PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a thermoplastic resin composition in which at least one of an oxidized cellulose fiber and a cellulose nanofiber is dispersed; and a thermoplastic resin composition.SOLUTION: A method for producing a thermoplastic resin composition includes: a mixing step; a drying step; and a low-temperature mixing step. The mixing step includes mixing at least one of an oxidized cellulose fiber and a cellulose nanofiber with a liquid medium to obtain a first mixture. The drying step includes drying the first mixture to obtain a second mixture. The low-temperature mixing step includes mixing the second mixture at a mixing temperature in a range between a temperature lower by 5°C than a melting point (Tm) of the thermoplastic resin and a temperature higher by less than 25°C than the melting point (Tm).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
