Apparatus 10 for use in a lifting system (12, fig 7) for lifting a cuboid shipping container 14, comprising: a lifting device having a first portion, such as a piston 18, with a ground surface engaging member 22, and a second portion, such as a cylinder barrel 20, movable relative to the first portion. The apparatus further comprises a corner aperture engaging member 40 for engaging an aperture 42 in a base corner block 44 of a cuboid shipping container, the aperture engaging member connected to the second portion and in use bearing the weight of the container. A container frame engaging member 60 connected to the second portion is also included for engaging a portion of a frame of the container above the base corner block 44 and below the vertically opposed upper corner block. The container frame engaging member 60 may comprise a frame contact member in the form of a disc 62, and a positioning member 64. A lifting system may comprising four lifting apparatus and a control device for supplying power to the apparatus, wherein each lifting apparatus is attached to a respective base corner block of a cuboid intermodal shipping container. The control device may comprise a hydraulic distribution device, a pressure measuring device and a display for displaying a weight being lifted by the apparatus. |
