A continuous process for exothermically reacting a liquid with a gaseous reagent comprises passing a metered quantity of the liquid through reactor mixers connected in series to which the gaseous reagent is fed in parallel in previously proportioned total quantity in excess of the stoichiometric amount, the gaseous reagent being subdivided proportionally to each of the reactor mixers to accomplish the reaction in a series of steps. In a preferred embodiment an additional metered quantity of liquid is fed to the last or to each reactor mixer so as to obtain a final product which is completely free from unreacted starting materials or excess of the reagents. As shown in the Figure, liquid passes from container 1 through conduit 2 to proportioning pump 3 and then successively through reactor vessels 4, 5, 6 and 7 into which is fed the gaseous reagent via conduit 27 and regulating valves 28, 28<SP>1</SP>, 28<SP>11</SP> and 28<SP>1</SP>" from preparation vessels 21, 24, 25 and 26. Exhaust gases are passed to recovery tower 30 and contact the liquid reagent, any unreacted gases being subsequently passed to recovery tower 32. Devices 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>11</SP> and 18111 determine the degree of reaction in each reactor and a correction pump 19 controlled by device 18<SP>111</SP> is provided for addition of liquid reagent. Correction pumps may also be disposed between the reactor mixers and are controlled by devices 18, 181 and 18<SP>11</SP>. The final product flows into tank 20. Reactions specified include the sulphonation, using sulphur trioxide, of alkylated hydrocarbons, phenols, aliphatic acids and alcohols.</p>
